A calico cat is a domestic cat with a coat that is typically 25% to 75% white with large orange and black patches. They are the Maryland State cat.

They are exclusively female except under rare genetic conditions. Only 1 out of every 3,000 calico cats born is male. Calico cats are predominantly female because their coat colouring is linked to the X chromosome. Specifically, two X chromosomes are needed for a cat to have a tri-colour coat. Males usually only have one X chromosome, so calico cats can't be male.
