Titi monkeys are actually a group of monkeys that belong to the genus Callicebus. There are about 20 different species, and the main way they are different is in their size and the patterns of colour in their fur. They range from about 1.5 to 4.5 pounds, and their fur colour can be anything from red to grey to brown to black.

The fur of the entire species is long and soft, and they all have long, furry tails. Unlike some monkeys, such as the spider monkey, titi monkey tails are not prehensile. This means they cannot use them to grab things or swing from them on branches.

There are species of titi monkey throughout much of South America, including Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and especially Brazil. Brazil contains the most species of titi monkey of any South American country, and there are some species that can only be found in Brazil.

Titi monkeys spend the majority of their time in trees, and very rarely come down out of the lower levels of the canopy, or treeline. As you might expect, they prefer to live in forested areas, especially near lakes and rivers. They are most common in rainforests and near the Amazon river.
