Crabs are decapod crustaceans of the infraorder Brachyura, which typically have a very short projecting "tail", usually entirely hidden under the thorax. Decapod means "ten-footed" and crabs have 10 legs, however, the first pair are its claws which are called chelae.  

There are over 4500 species of crabs and they live in all the world's oceans, in fresh water, and on land, are generally covered with a thick exoskeleton and have a single pair of pincers.

The collective name for the group of crabs is a cast and they can comminicate with each other by drumming or waving their pincers.
